With Eye On China, India Plans Increasing Barriers On Asian Imports
The government is planning to raise quality standards of imports, impose quantity restrictions, mandate stringent disclosure norms and initiate more frequent checks at ports of entry for goods coming from many Asian countries, the NDTV Reported.
- India is considering measures to prevent trade partners mainly in Southeast Asia from re-routing Chinese goods to the country with little added value, two government sources told news agency Reuters, amid strained ties with Beijing and a push for self-reliance.
- The moves will mainly target imports of base metals, electronic components for laptops and mobile phones, furniture, leather goods, toys, rubber, textiles, air conditioners and televisions, among other items, the officials added.
- Last week, the trade ministry issued a notice to restrict inbound shipments of TVs by requiring importers to get a special license.
- The moves are expected to primarily hurt Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore – members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with which India has a free trade agreement (FTA).
- The government is also worried about heavy trade flows from South Korea. “Raising duties has a limited impact,” said one of the officials.
Avoid politicizing normal cooperation, says China on India’s Confucius Institutes move
“We hope Indian relevant parties can treat Confucius Institutes and China-India higher education cooperation in an objective and fair manner, avoid politicizing normal cooperation, and maintain healthy and stable development of China-India people-to-people and cultural exchanges,” the statement said.

- The Ministry has sent letters to at least five institutions that offer Chinese language training, asking them to send all details of collaboration since 2017, which will be reviewed by Education Secretary Amit Khare on August 5.

Give “Another Chance” To India and sought a larger-Bench: Pak Court on Lawyer For Kulbhushan Jadhav,
- A top Pakistani court has named three senior lawyers as amici curiae (a lawyer appointed by a court to assist in any matter or case) in the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav as it ordered the Pakistan Govt to give “another chance” to India to appoint a counsel for the death-row prisoner.
- We appoint Mr Abid Hassan Manto, Mr Hamid Khan, Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court and former presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and Mr Makhdoom Ali Khan, Senior Advocate Supreme Court and former Attorney General of Pakistan, as amici curiae for our legal assistance in general and, in particular, to ensure that the judgement of the International Court is effectively implemented, the court said in its order.
- In March 2016, Pakistan arrested Mr Jadhav, a former naval officer, and accused him of “espionage” – a charge India rubbished.
- After he was sentenced to death, India took Pakistan to the world court.
- The decision came less than a fortnight after India accused Pakistan of blocking all chances of legal remedy for Mr Jadhav, an Indian national sentenced to death on charges of espionage.
- Pakistan, the foreign ministry said, had blocked 12 Indian requests for unimpeded consular meetings, defying the International Court of Justice.
- Since his death sentence by a military court in 2017, Pakistan has allowed consular access to Mr Jadhav only twice.
- Both meetings were monitored and recorded and there was no free conversation, India said.
- During the second meeting -which took place last month ahead of filing of the review petition — Mr Jadhav was accompanied by Pakistani officials and under “visible stress”, India said.
- The foreign ministry said the consular officials “could not engage” Mr Jadhav on his legal rights and were “prevented from obtaining his written consent for arranging his legal representation”.
- Today, a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court heard a petition filed by the Pakistan government for the appointment of a lawyer for Mr Jadhav.
- In the petition, the government asked the court to appoint a lawyer. It also said Mr Jadhav had refused to file a petition for a review of the death sentence by the military court and wanted to appeal for mercy.
- “Now that the matter is in the high court, why not give India another chance,” Justice Athar Minallah, one of the two judges, was quoted as saying by Geo News.
- The Indian government or Mr Jadhav may reconsider their decision regarding the review petition, the judge added.
- The next hearing of the case will be held on Sept 3.
- In July last year, the ICJ said Pakistan must review the death sentence of Kulbhushan Jadhav. The court also agreed with India’s stand that Pakistan had violated the Vienna convention by denying consular access to him after his conviction in a “farcical” closed trial.
