Top News of the Week
This 7th week of lockdown can’t be said to dedicate to Corona but along with some relaxations in lockdown in selected area and some noise across boarder.
Graph is no way going towards flattening as numbers of tests are increasing, it was expected.
As previously, this week too, news can be divided into two segments, COVID and Non-COVID issues. Since the number of non-COVID news was less. So let’s have it first.
Tension between India and Pakistan intensified after the Order of SC, Pak.
- On Sat, Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Syed Salahuddin while addressing cadre in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir has confessed that India has killed 80 terrorists since Jan 2020. Salahuddin hits out at ‘failed policies’ of Pakistan Govt which have resulted in India defeating Pak terror in Kashmir. This video surfaced in afternoon which question the claim of Pak PM that he has to do nothing in Indian terrorism.
- In night itself, as per Indian intell input notable amount of Pak air force’s activities were observed, which has been taken note by NSA, Ajit Doval. Doval carried out operational review of security situation in Jammu & Kashmir. Briefed in detail by the top security and intelligence brass on Pakistan’s terror moves in Kashmir. Top officials of the Indian Army & J&K Police also participated. HM Amit Shah also briefed.
- Pakistan Sponsored Hizbul Mujahideen Over Ground Worker (OGW) Raqib Alam arrested today by security forces in Doda of Jammu & Kashmir. During interrogation, Tanveer – an OGW who was arrested earlier, had disclosed the name of one Raqib Alam (age 22 yrs) working as OGW on Thurs.
- IMD’s Weather Forecast Now Lists PoK & Gilgit-Baltistan, After India Tells Pak To Vacate
- In a subtle shift, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has started referring to its meteorological sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir as “JnK, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad”. Muzaffarabad is part of PoK while Gilgit-Baltistan is also under illegal Pakistani occupation.
- The change in name started to get reflected from Tue in the daily forecast for northwest India, issued by IMD from New Delhi. The daily region-wise forecasts are for the entire sub-division, and not for any specific areas within.
- The IMD move not only reflects the changed status of Ladakh as a separate Union Territory but conveys a significant underlying message. It comes within days of the Pakistan Supreme Court’s decision to allow the federal government to hold elections in Gilgit-Baltistan.
- After IMD, on Thurs, Doordarshan’s weather bulletin today onwards will have forecasts for Mirpur & Muzaffarabad in PoK & Gilgit in Northern Areas which are illegally occupied Indian territories. Seems like, constant reminder to Islamabad.
- On April 30, Pakistan’s top court had allowed the federal government’s application to set up a caretaker government and conduct provincial assembly elections. On Monday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had lodged a “strong protest” against the decision, saying Pakistani institutions had “no locus standi on territories illegally or forcibly occupied by it”.
- ‘Areas of Gilgit and Baltistan are an integral part of India’: “It was further conveyed that such actions can neither hide the illegal occupation of parts of Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by Pakistan nor the grave human rights violations, exploitation and denial of freedom to the people residing in Pakistan occupied territories for the past seven decades,” it said in a statement.
- The MEA said the government of Pakistan or its judiciary has no locus standi on territories “illegally and forcibly” occupied by it. “It was clearly conveyed that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas of Gilgit and Baltistan, are an integral part of India by virtue of its fully legal and irrevocable accession,” the MEA said.
- It said India protested Islamabad’s efforts to “bring material change in Pakistan occupied territories” and asked it to vacate them. “India completely rejects such actions and continued attempts to bring material changes in Pakistan occupied areas of the Indian territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” the MEA said. “Instead, Pakistan should immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation,” it added.

Lipulekh pass is a far western point near Kalapani, a disputed border area between Nepal and India. Both India and Nepal claim Kalapani as an integral part of their territory – India as part of Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district and Nepal as part of Darchula district.

India’s Covid-19 fight has a Mumbai problem and it’s getting out of hand.
The virus spread in the country’s financial capital has moved in a trajectory that’s taking it away from the national curve, and closer to some of the European cities. Such is the concern at the highest echelons of the government that a central team was dispatched to Mumbai on Thursday to take stock of the situation. Clearly, the time has come to think in terms of a national-level special action plan for Mumbai and its suburbs.
CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN | RAILWAYS TO RUN ‘SHRAMIK SPECIAL’ TRAINS TO MOVE MIGRANT WORKERS, OTHER STRANDED PERSONS
The Indian Railways on May 1, 2020, began operating ‘Shramik Special’ trains to transport migrant workers, tourists, pilgrims, students and others, who were stranded due to the sudden nationwide lockdown effective March 22, back to their home States.
The decision follows revised guidelines by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) allowing the movement of such people by railways. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, all passenger train services have remained suspended for nearly 40 days.
First such special train, however, was run even before the MHA orders were issued to ferry about 1,200 migrants from Lingampalli (in Telangana) to Hatia (in Jharkhand) at around 5 am on Friday. Terming it a “one-off special train”, a railways official said this was done on the request of the Telangana government.
So far, 320 Shramik Special trains have been run by Railways for workers, 255 of which have reached their destinations.

Killing of PTM Leader Further Antagonizes Pakistan Pashtun Rights Defenders- The Diplomat
Pakistan civil rights group Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) lost another key leader and activist, Sardar Arif Wazir in an attack perpetrated by unidentified armed men on May 1 in the country’s South Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan.
The 35-year-old, Wazir, a cousin of Pakistani parliamentarian Ali Wazir, was targeted on 4th days after his release from a Pakistani prison. He was arrested on Apr 17 on charges of delivering an “anti-Pakistan speech” during his visit to Afghanistan.
He has become 18th member of his immediate and extended family targeted since the launch of Pakistan’s anti-Taliban military operations in the tribal region in 2003.
Pakistani officials have been silent about the possible motive of the murder and the perpetrators. There has been no claim of responsibility from any armed group operating in the region.
PTM central leader and member of Pakistan national assembly from North Waziristan Mohsin Dawar, however, said in a tweet that “Arif Wazir was murdered by “good terrorists.” Our struggle against their masters will continue.”
The PTM and the “Peace Committee”
The term “good terrorists” refers to the pro-government armed groups that locals sarcastically call the “good Taliban.” The Pakistani government and military style the groups as a “peace committee.” The so-called peace committee members bear arms without being questioned by the security agencies. They support the military presence in Waziristan and fight against those Taliban who target the Pakistani security forces.
For years, leaders of the PTM, among other demands, have asked for the disbanding of the “peace committee” and across-the-board action against all armed groups, whom PTM leaders believe are posing a threat to the security of the common people.
Relations between the PTM and the Pakistani authorities remained tense over tricky issues such as the presence of armed groups and alleged human rights violations. And the latest killing has further antagonized the already tense environment.
Since its emergence in Jan 2018 as a nonviolent group campaigning for civil rights, PTM has openly criticized Pakistan military and its intelligence agencies, accusing them of human rights
violations in the tribal region. The Pakistani authorities, on the other hand, accuse the PTM leadership of getting funds from Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies.
While the majority of Pakistani politicians, journalists, and rights activists bite their tongues and use various metaphors when it comes to the military and its intelligence agencies, the PTM leadership is willing to name names in its allegations of human rights violations in the name of anti-Taliban military operations.
The group’s initial demands included the
Thousands from the tribal region immediately rallied to the PTM call. The presence of the military and various armed groups there have curbed freedoms, including the freedoms of movement, assembly, and affiliation, of the region’s fiercely independent people — besides damaging their properties, businesses, farming, and their social life.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her October 2011 visit to Pakistan, famously warned Islamabad that “you can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them only to bite your neighbors.” A month before that, in September 2011, another top U.S. official, then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, called the Haqqani Network of the Taliban “a veritable arm of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency.” More recently, U.S President Donald Trump, in a January 1, 2018 tweet, accused Pakistan of “lies and deceit” in its fight against the terrorists that the United States is hunting in Afghanistan.
- In some estimates, the various armed groups that came to settle in the tribal region following the overthrow of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in late 2001 had targeted and slaughtered nearly 2,000 well-known tribal elders or their family members. They were murdered for their opposition or noncompliance.
- Since 2003, Pakistani security forces have conducted multiple large- and small-scale anti-Taliban operations in Waziristan. However, the tribal people expressed their reservations about those operations, mainly because they always resulted in civilian displacement and lost lives and property while the Taliban continued to hold ground and gain strength.
- For more than a decade, the rest of Pakistan and the world was led to believe that it is the tribal people who support the Taliban and their Sharia system, supposedly because this is in accordance with tribal customs and traditions. However, the PTM leadership, the majority of whom are young men who grew up under the shadow of Taliban guns, dispelled that widely-spread perception by demanding peace and an end to all kinds of armed groups – whether “good” or “bad” Taliban – on their land.
- The recent dispute that took the life of PTM leader Arif Wazir apparently stems from the presence of the same pro-government armed groups. According to some reports and accounts from locals, the so-called peace committee members regulate public life, collect taxes, punish alleged offenders, and silence government critics.
- In June 2018, two PTM activists were injured in a clash with the “peace committee” members in Wana, the center of South Waziristan. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad soon after the incident, then-spokesperson for Pakistan Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, Major-General Asif Ghafoor had said that “peace committee” members were infuriated by the PTM’s anti-military and anti-state slogans, which led to the clash.
- The PTM is not the first to raise objections to the policy of distinguishing between “good” and “bad” in Pakistan’s approach to curbing militancy and its role in the anti-terror war. The United States, Pakistan’s anti-terrorism ally, has also been raising objections to the country’s role in fighting the Taliban.
- But Pakistani authorities strenuously disagreed. Pakistan says it rendered greater sacrifices than any other country in the anti-terror war. Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a tweet on November 19, 2018, said that “no Pakistani was involved in 9/11 [terrorist attacks] but Pakistan decided to participate in the U.S. war on terror.” Khan further added that his country suffered 75,000 casualties and over $123 billion in losses to its economy.
- What Next?
- Whatever his political views and his standing vis-à-vis the government, Arif Wazir was a Pakistani citizen and leader of a popular group, not to mention the cousin of a sitting MP. His tragic death was caused by unidentified attackers who also target the Pakistani security forces and civilians.
- However, very few Pakistani television channels and newspapers reported on Arif Wazir’s murder. Besides, there was no condemnation of the attack by any top government official. Instead, a malicious campaign was launched on twitter against the Wazir family.
- This will further alienate the youth and the people of Waziristan, who strongly believe that they are being oppressed both by militant groups and the state security agencies. This perception is rooted in years of frustration with successive governments that failed to bring a positive change in terms of infrastructure development, education, civic facilities, and legal and constitutional status. For decades, the tribal people used to be considered as second-class Pakistanis mainly because their areas were regulated under the colonial-era Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).
Although the tribal districts were merged into the adjacent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018 and the FCR law was repealed and replaced with the full sphere of the constitution of Pakistan, some parts of the tribal region remain
- information black holes. The information vacuum is keeping incidents of human rights violations from being reported in the media. One recent example is several protests by the locals, youth in particular, demanding the extension of mobile phone 3G/4G internet service in the region.
- The government may not be happy with some of the PTM statements or their demands, but there is no denying the fact that the group’s activists always remained peaceful during their sit-in protests over the past two years.
It is high time for the Pakistani authorities to open a meaningful channel of communication and dialogue with the PTM leadership. Cornering them by gagging their voice in the media will lead to further alienation that may create serious problems in the future.
Pakistani military launches fresh offensives in Bolan
- On May 8th the ground and air operations, raids and arrests are being carried out by Pakistani forces in different parts of Baluchistan during the global epidemic of corona virus and during the holy month of Ramadan.

- However, no arrests have been reported in the ongoing operation at the time of filing this report.

- Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sun, there was “a significant amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus emerged from a Chinese laboratory, but did not dispute U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that it was not man-made.
- Pompeo then briefly contradicted a statement issued last Thurs by the top U.S. spy agency that said the virus did not appear to be man-made or genetically modified. That statement undercut conspiracy theories promoted by anti-China activists and some supporters of President Donald Trump who suggest it was developed in a Chinese government biological weapons laboratory. Moreover, National Institute of Health (NIH) has also been claimed that it is natural and not man-made.
- “The best experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point,” Pompeo said. When the interviewer pointed out that was not the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies, Pompeo backtracked, saying: “I’ve seen what the intelligence community has said. I have no reason to believe that they’ve got it wrong.”
- Meanwhile, China increase the vigilance in South China and East China Sea by deploying submarines and warships’ numbers. News was also in media that some tunnel like structures are constructed by Beijing under newly constructed islands in sea to protect their submarines from attack.
- By May 2020 relations had reached a new low as both sides were accusing the other of guilt for the worldwide coronavirus epidemic. Washington has mobilized a campaign of investigations, prosecutions and export restrictions. Beijing has stepped up military activities in the contested South China Sea, and launched denunciations of American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Chinese officials have publicly speculated that the American military deliberately unleashed the virus in China. American polls show the public has increasingly negative views of China.
- China’s Global Times, run by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, said in an editorial responding to Pompeo’s Sunday interview that he did not have any evidence the virus came from the lab in Wuhan and that he was “bluffing,” calling on the United States to present the evidence.

Al-Qaeda calls for Muslims in India to wage jihad against that country
The propaganda barrage against India from Pakistan, Kuwait and across the Muslim world has been relentless. Even the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been appealed to in complaints against India over “Islamophobia.”
Now Al-Qaeda has entered the anti-India campaign, making no secret that it is really all about Kashmir, not the alleged “ill treatment” of Muslims in India, aka “Islamophobia,” a term routinely used by Islamic supremacists and jihadis to hide their underlying ambitions.[1]
Al-Qaeda Urges Indian Muslims to Wage Jihad Against India,” Homeland Security Today, May 4, 2020:
Almost a year after its chief Ayman al-Zawahiri asked militants in Kashmir to step up terror attacks against India, Al Qaeda on Monday urged Indian Muslims to join the Islamist jihad.
Yemen’s Al Qaeda in Arab Peninsula (AQAP), the globally banned terrorist group, issued a statement accusing India of being part of a global war on Muslims. Also Read – #IStandWithMasratZahra: Outrage on Twitter After Kashmir Journalist Charged for ‘Anti-National’ FB Posts
US Lawmakers Urge 60 Countries To Support Taiwan's Participation At WHO
US congressional foreign affairs committees wrote to 60 ‘like-minded’ countries on May 8 asking them to support Taiwan’s participation in the WHO.
Citing the need for the broadest effort possible to fight the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the leaders of the United States congressional foreign affairs committees wrote to 60 ‘like-minded’ countries on May 8 asking them to support Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization. Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, hence, it has been excluded from the WHO due to the objections from China.
According to an international media report, the US lawmakers in the letter said that while the world is battling to overcome the deadly virus, it is important to ensure that all countries priorities global health and safety over politics. The lawmakers added that Taiwan’s resources and expertise are ‘assets’ that could benefit the world.
Infectious disease experts agree that, like most emerging human disease, coronavirus initially jumped undetected from an animal to a human
- But it remains unclear whether that animal was linked to the now infamous Wuhan wildlife market in China.
- The virus that causes Covid-19 joins a murky list, including Ebola, rabies, Sars and Mers. All of these originated in wild bat populations.
- Most of us have heard that the virus “started” in a wildlife market in Wuhan
- But the source of the virus – an animal with this pathogen in its body – has never been found in the market
- “The infection could have come from somewhere else and just, by chance, clustered around people there”
- Prof James Wood from the University of Cambridge says “given that it is an animal virus, the market association is highly suggestive”.
- In the search for the missing link in this particular transmission chain, scientists found clues pointing to mink, ferrets and even turtles as a host.
- However, none of these suspect species has been shown to be involved in this outbreak.
- What we do know is that our contact with, and trading of, wild animals puts us in the path of new diseases that are silently seeking a host.
- The WHO has already called for stricter hygiene and safety standards for so-called wet markets in China.
- But in many cases markets are informal, so very difficult to regulate.
However, US President Donald Trump “WHO is puppet for China, will soon make a decision”
Donald Trump has already suspended funding to the WHO, accusing it of being misguiding the world on the coronavirus and siding with China on this issue.”They didn’t want us to go in. The World Health Organization, as you know, we pay them almost USD 500 million a year. I’m going to be making an announcement on that soon because they are like a puppet for China. They’re a puppet for China. Everything China does is OK. They get USD 38 million from China,” How does that work?” he asked.
India, Pakistan Nuclear Procurement Networks Larger than Thought
Hundreds of foreign companies are actively procuring components for India and Pakistan’s nuclear programs, taking advantage of gaps in the global regulation of the industry, according to a report by a U.S.-based research group. Using open-source data, the nonprofit Centre For Advance Defense Studies (C4ADS) report provides one of the most comprehensive overviews of networks supplying the rivals, in a region regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous nuclear flashpoints.
It is seldom possible to determine whether individual transactions are illegal by using publicly available data, Margolin said, and the report does not suggest that companies mentioned broke national or international laws or regulations.
But past reports by the think tank, whose financial backers include the Carnegie Corporation and the Wyss Foundation, have often led to action by law enforcement agencies.
- Spokesmen from the offices of India’s PM Narendra Modi, and Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan did not respond to requests for comment. Pakistan’s military, which plays a major role in decision-making for the nuclear weapons program, also declined to comment.
- To identify companies involved, C4ADS analyzed more than 125 million records of public trade and tender data and documents, and then checked them against already-identified entities listed by export control authorities in the United States and Japan.
- Pakistan, which is subject to strict international export controls on its program, has 113 suspected foreign suppliers listed by the United States and Japan. But the C4ADS report found an additional 46, many in shipment hubs like Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE.
- “In Pakistan’s case, they have a lot more stringent controls, and they get around these by using transnational networks… and exploiting opaque jurisdictions,” Margolin said.
- The father of Pakistan’s atomic bomb, AQ Khan, admitted in 2004 to selling nuclear technology to North Korea, Iran and Libya. He was pardoned a day later by Pakistani authorities, which have refused requests from international investigators to question him.
- India has a waiver that allows it to buy nuclear technology from international markets. The Indian government allows inspections of some nuclear facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency, but not all of them.
- Neither India nor Pakistan have signed the international Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, adhered to by most nuclear powers. Consequently, they are not obliged to submit to IAEA oversight over all of their facilities.
- C4ADS identified 222 companies that did business with the nuclear facilities in India that had no IAEA oversight. Of these, 86 companies did business with more than one such nuclear facility in India.

BioNTech said in a statement that in a next step, it will begin increasing the dose of BNT162 in a trial involving about 200 participants aged 18 to 55. The company said it expects to receive regulatory approval to begin trials in the United States soon.
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman jointly reject efforts of some of their citizens to accuse India of Islamophobia. Instead, they thank India for its “invaluable help” in fighting COVID-19.
You might remember that in last week it has been floated hugely on social media that Muslim countries are largely against India, especially UAE. This in later days, made a clarification that its fake account on the name of Royal Family as per Indian media quoted and it has also been claimed that Pakistani ISI was behind all these games.
